How to put a nail clipper back together

Accidents happen. But dropping your nail clippers partway through trimming your nails and watching all the pieces clatter in different directions is extremely annoying. It may appear that your lever-style nail clippers are broken beyond repair, but it’s likely that they are very fixable. It’s time to pick up the pieces and let Swissklip show you how to put nail clippers back together so you can finish your nail care routine.

What you’ll need to fix your nail clippers

Breaking items can be annoying, especially when they come apart into multiple pieces. Thankfully, fixing your lever-style nail clippers is quite straight forward and only requires a couple of items.

The Broken Nail Clippers

Of course, in order to fix your broken clippers, you’ll need all the pieces and parts. Make sure you haven’t lost any pins that may have scattered when you dropped or broke the clippers. All parts are essential for a successful restoration. Thankfully there aren’t that many pieces overall.

Tweezers or Needle nosed Pliers

Although you can fix your clippers with just your hands, you may find that it’s easier to use a pair of pliers or tweezers to hold the pin in place while reassembling the clippers.

How to fix your nail clippers step-by-step

As we mentioned, reassembling your nail clippers is a simple task that only takes a few steps. Follow the instructions below to learn how to easily fix your nail clippers.

Step 1 – Re-connect the Pin

Using your fingers, tweezers, or needle-nosed pliers, re-insert the pin through the hole in the main body of the clippers, making sure the hook is sticking out the top.

Step 2 – Squeeze the clippers

Next, while keeping the pin in place, squeeze the clippers together. Your thumb and forefinger should be sufficient but you may wish to use your pliers for greater control. Doing so exposes the hook or notch on the pin where the lever attaches. Make sure the notch is facing the blades of the clippers.

Step 3  – Attaching the Handle / Lever to the pin

On the lever handle of the clippers, find the opening. While ensuring the main part of the handle is pointing up and away from the clipper blades, attach this end to the notch in the pin. Once you’ve threaded this through the notch, you can release the pin and the body of your clippers. The tension should keep the handle in place.

Step 4 – Turn the handle the correct way round

After re-attaching the handle, your clippers should now be functional again. To use your clippers, twist the handle around so it’s in line with the body of the clippers. To store your slippers, spin the handle and flip it back on itself so it lies flat.

When to replace you nail clippers

Sometimes, clippers just can’t be fixed and it’s time to replace them instead.

Excessive wear and tear

Over time, your clippers may wear down, making them more prone to parts breaking or loosening that no amount of re-assembly can fix. This kind of damage may not be noticeable but it can lead to less accurate cutting and restricted movement of the clippers.

Structural Damage

If you drop them too many times or misuse your nail clippers, this can cause structural damage. The blades can become misaligned which leads to reduced precision and may make it more difficult to trim your nails.

Your nail clippers aren’t fit for purpose

You may find that a standard pair of lever nail clippers don’t suit your needs. In this case, it’s important to replace your clippers with a pair that do. This is to avoid injury from misuse or poorly cut nails which can not only catch on clothing but also cause issues such as ingrown nails.

Using clippers that are too weak or too small on thicker toenails, for example, can lead to damage both on your clippers and your nails. Additionally, if you have a weak grip or have trouble with accessibility, you may find that a standard pair of nail clippers is too difficult to use which may increase the risk of slipping, which can put you at risk of injury.
